A Windy Halloween

I love Halloween. I don't think any other holiday shows off as much creativity as Halloween. Sure, Christmas comes close. With Christmas, you decorate your house, your yard and even a tree in your living room. With Halloween, you decorate (almost) all that and yourself.

For the past few years, I have been wanting to get more and more into it. Living in a little rented town home made it nearly impossible. We could throw a few lights in our window and risk a pumpkin outside our front door, but I never felt comfortable going all out. This year, we have a house. It was a modest start (budget constraints), but it was a start.

First, there were the pumpkins. We have carved our own pumpkins in the past, so not much is really new here. I am however, very happy with this year's results.

Left to Right: Jen's, Travis's Mine

I went with a traditional design, but I tried something new. Look at the eyes and the teeth on mine. I'll probably get a little more creative next year.

Decorating the yard was really tough. We had some really high winds (50 - 70km/h). This meant we couldn't do half of what we wanted to do. In the end, almost everything was confined to the front porch in front of the door. We got one of those inflatable decorations, but it would have blown away if I put it in the yard. Event the chips we put out kept blowing away. In the end, our display was okay. Next year will be much better,  though (as long as it isn't windy again).

The Front Step
As I said, it was a good first step.

After decorating the house, we headed into town because we were bringing Travis and his friends to Fort Fright (A haunted display at Fort Henry). This meant a ferry ride on a small ferry in those high winds.

As you can see, the waters were very rough. These pictures don't begin to describe it. At one point, the ferry had to turn around and effectively back in to the bay where the mainland dock is. It was a strange feeling going backwards on a boat.

We made it to Fort Fright and had an excellent time. The boys were thrilled and we adults even had a scare or two thrown our way. I highly recommend it to any visitor to Kingston. Unfortunately, I didn't bring my camera because I didn't think it was appropriate. I was very wrong and I will definitely have it next year.
